Alpha 1 Bellows Installation

Posted on

So I started the job of replacing the Gimble bearing, inside seal, along with water pump and new bellows basically all new seals. Everything is going together just fine and I am down to the U-Joint Bellows. What is the trick here? I just cannot get the bellows to go far enough into the housing so I can install the ring. It really seems like the bellows from SEI does not have a long enough lip.

Hey Folks,So I could use some advice. I was replacing the bellows and gimbal bearing in my '97 1930 SS, and have run into a snag. I have the new bearing installed and the new water and oil line installed. The trouble I am having is fishing the shift cable back through. The real cause of my issue is, because I am an idiot, I pulled the shift cable through the transom, while leaving it attached to the bell housing, without drawing another line through to fish it back into place later. If I ever have to do this again, I have learned my lesson and will either do that, or will just spend the $40 on the special socket to take it off the bell housing. Live and learn, I guess.

Anyway, I was starting to feed the shift cable back through, and am not able to get it to feed through. My girlfriend and I spent a ton of time working on it, thankfully she is smaller than I and fits back in the engine bay a bit better than I. We can see the cable, and can get a straightened coat hanger on it, but can't get the bugger to feed up. To make matters worse, now I can't even pull the cable back out of the transom! It feels really and truly stuck. So at this point, what are my options? Would taking the starboard exhaust manifold (this is the 4.3L) off gain us any visibly or access to where the cable comes through?

Is there any other options other than pulling the dang engine? Any other words of wisdom or suggestions? Thanks for any advice!
